UN Conference on Sustainable Development: Global environmental problems demand global action
The expectations of the Preparatory Commission for the World Nature Organization for action are high: Rio +20 concluded with a big package of commitments for action and an agreement by world leaders on path for a sustainable future.
Geneva.– Although the earth faces global environmental challenges on climate change, water and air pollution, deforestation and many other challenges, it is still difficult for countries to combine environmental protection and economic growth. In order to halt humanity’s destruction of the planet, the governments of the world gathered in Rio for a Summit.
According to the Preparatory Commission for the World Nature Organization such a summit is an important step. It reflects that an intergovernmental Organization is needed to work out a new blueprint for a “green economy” and a stronger system of global environmental governance. It became clear to the international community that global environmental problems demand global action and an IGO to face the global challenges.
The 50,000 participants at the Conference in Rio acknowledged the huge environmental challenges. The international community tries to address the linked problems of climate change, water scarcity, environmental degradation and poverty as well as hunger. Despite the strong will to change, to shift patterns and to support a global sustainable development, the Conference in Rio was in many ways overshadowed by economic and political crises around the world. But nevertheless, the outcomes of the UN Conference reaffirm past commitments and the importance of global action.
The World Nature Organization will be a platform to discuss the environmental protection and the economic development, which is in the interest of every country. The IGO is supposed to create a new assertiveness by developing nations in international forums while, at the same time, making the economic value of nature apparent and enable scientific research. Through a continuously growing power the World Nature Organization shall mold effective environmental action and discuss environmental issues together with governmental representatives at the “green table”. The WNO is supposed to be the driving force behind environmental action. It’s time environmental problems and public problems were governed as one.
